This Indian statue was originally part of the MACO theater, which opened in downtown Virginia, MN on August 26, 1938. The MACO theater was designed with an art deco Indian theme. The statues were built in 1920 in Montana.
There were originally two Indian statues, one on each side of the main screen, mounted above the exit doorways. The effect of installing the statues overhead made them appear even larger. If you look closely, you can see that there is a small uplight behind the Indian's arms which highlighted the face of the statue.
After the theater was sold and converted to a church in the 90's the statues were sold through four different antique dealers in northern Minnesota. We discovered them in May of 2004 in an antique store in Wisconsin.
We recognized the statue immediately (we both went to movies at the MACO when we were teenagers), and knew we had to have it for our own theater...a part of history. (In fact this is were I saw Star Wars, when I was seven years old!)
As you can see, he is quite tall, and very majestic. Click on a picture to see full size.
